Dr. Clarissa Anderson - How is Domoic Acid Poisoning Effecting Sea Mammals and How Can We Help?
Dr. Anderson describes the effect domoic acid has on sea mammals, particularly the dolphins and sea lions that are washing up on our shores.
If you see a stranded sea animal on the beach be sure to call a hotline and follow these instructions from The Channel Islands marine & Wildlife Institute:
1. DO NOT TOUCH!
Do not touch, feed, harass,
cover, pour water on, allow dogs
near or take selfies with the animal.
These are wild animals and they may bite!
2. OBSERVE THE ANIMAL
Observe the animal from a
minimum of 50 feet.
Keep people and pets away.
Note the animal’s physical characteristics and condition.
3. DETERMINE THE LOCATION
Determine the exact location
of the animal.
Note any landmarks so
Channel Islands Marine and
Wildlife Institute’s rescue
team can easily find the animal.
