DFWM Safety and Prevention Tips
With Dr. Teri Jory

This Sexual Assault Awareness month and always, it is important to stay informed and prepared to protect yourself and those around you. As a 4th degree black belt, Teri created DFWM (Don't F**k With Me) Self-Defense and teaches classes empowering you in your personal safety to help you feel comfortable in your own skin, no matter where life takes you.

We are here to share 4 general Rules of Self-Defense with you:

1. Prevent

2. Yell—Be Loud!

3. Escape

4. Survival (coming soon!)

1. Prevention is the Best Self-Defense

  • Be aware of your surroundings; only walk and park in well-lit areas.

  • Keep your keys (with a whistle or spray attached) easily accessible as you approach your car or door.

  • At a party, stick with your friends.

  • If your drink is out of sight for just a few seconds, get a new one; spiking a drink with a date rape drug can happen quickly.

  • When going on a date, tell a friend where you're going, especially if it's a first date or a blind date.

  • If someone pushes you to do something you don't want to do, you have a right to leave.

  • Always charge your cell phone and keep it on you! Keep a charger with you, too.

  • Put on your "DFWM eyes".

2. Yell—Be Loud!

  • If someone is in your face, yell at them: “Back off”, or just yell!

  • Demonstrate that you’re going public, you’re going to attract other people’s attention; you’re not an easy target.

3. Escape

  • If a perpetrator grabs you, the first thing you’re going to do is yell. Then do whatever’s necessary to get away: bite, stomp their foot with your heels, poke their eyes out. Whatever it is….do it. And know that you can escape even against someone bigger or stronger than you.
