Hello, Santa Barbara!

The Role Of The Media In Mass Shooting Coverage

What role can or should the Media be playing in the processing and navigating of mass shootings that are significantly increasing (https://www.gunviolencearchive.org)? Is it appropriate or informative for the Media to be broadcasting photos of victims of mass shootings like in Allen, Texas; or are those images exploitive?

Defining the role of the Media is important because many of our neighbors are being personally impacted by mass shootings either because they have been directly involved in the mass shooting or are a family member, friend, or member of the community impacted.

In our exclusive interview below, The Resource discusses what the importance of the Media’s role can and should be in helping community members have context during and in the aftermath of these violent incidents -with President and Co-Founder Seth Geiger of SmithGeiger Group.

A Glimpse Into Havana

The Fighting Spirit Of Cuba

Dr. Teri Jory ventured into the vibrant city of Havana and beyond with the Santa Barbara Colleges of Law to do field study work involving an Environmental Law comparison between the United States and Cuba. Believe it or not, Cuba is a leading environmental model in the world – out of necessity.

Watch our exclusive promo below for a glimpse into the fighting spirit of Cuba, or as Cubans say “Hasta que se seque el malecón,” a quote from a song that illustrates the will of the Cuban people to keep going, living and enjoying life.

The Private Universe Of James Castle: Drawings From The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation And James Castle Collection And Archive

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has on display the works of extraordinary self-taught artist James Castle, showcasing his incredible talent and skill in over 90 of his most accomplished works.

“The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is the presentation's sole venue and represents the first exhibition of Castle's works in Southern California. The show highlights the artist's remarkable technical skills and attempts to foster a better understanding of his evocative and unconventional images, particularly his landscapes and architectural interior scenes. Unfortunately, the common perception of Castle and his art has tended to be very limited due to emphasis on his physical impairments—he was profoundly deaf and largely mute—and his geographic isolation, working in rural Idaho.

The exhibition and accompanying scholarly catalog places Castle in a larger artistic and cultural context and explores the imaginative innovations of his works, mainly drawings produced with soot from a woodstove and his saliva, rendered on scraps of found paper.” - SBMA
