Livestream: Anti-Semitism

Speaking Out Against Hate in Our Community

As many of you may know, fliers containing Anti-Semitic hate speech were distributed to houses around the Mesa on the first night of Chanukah. The Resource Livestream will continue to shine a light on the fight against Anti-Semitism with our guest, Community Shul of Montecito and Santa Barbara's Rabbi Arthur Gross-Schaefer, who will help us explore this issue deeper.

Click the link below to join the livestream Saturday, January 21, at 6:00pm through The Resource Live to learn why Anti-Semitism is gaining traction and what we can do to disempower those hateful voices:

Ocean Water Quality:

Sewage Contamination Due to Santa Barbara's Tumultuous Rainstorm

Even after the City spent over $20 million in sewer system improvements due to a lawsuit from Santa Barbara Channelkeeper (2011–2019), the sewer system still could not keep up during our most recent rainstorm. East Beach at Mission Creek, including West Beach, closed during the rainstorm due to a sewage spill. Many of the surrounding beaches have warning signs, meaning that sampling results at that beach indicate bacterial levels exceed one or more state health standards.

Current Rainstorm and Tidal Activity

Contributed to Summerland Beach Oil Sheen

According to a press release from the California Office of Spill Prevention and Response, our current rainstorm and tidal activity could have been a contributing factor to the natural oil seepage. Lab results "from multiple locations onshore and offshore of Summerland indicate the product is consistent with local natural seep oil." Another possibility is that the oil seepage could have been from the 200 legacy wells sitting off the coast of Summerland.

The California Office of Spill Prevention and Response assert that as of Saturday, January 14, the oil cannot be recovered, though cleanup contractors are on standby. One oiled bird was rescued by wildlife reconnaissance crews.
