Australia’s Gun Buyback

After the deadliest mass shooting in Australia, a mandatory nation-wide gun buyback was held and resulted in over 650,000 guns being confiscated and destroyed. The buyback, in addition to the National Firearms Agreement, restricted legal ownership of firearms in Australia, established a registry of all guns owned in the country, and required a permit for all new firearm purchases leading to a sharp decrease in the firearm suicide and homicide rate, according to research.
